What actually gets deducted from an eBay sale

When an item sells on eBay, you don't keep the full selling price. eBay charges a final value fee calculated on the total amount the buyer pays — item price plus shipping — along with a small fixed per-order fee, before you even account for your own item cost and shipping.

Why the fee percentage changes by category

CategoryTypical fee range
Most categoriesAround 13%–14%
Consumer ElectronicsLower, around 8%
Clothing, Jewelry & WatchesHigher, around 15%
Business & IndustrialLowest, around 3%

eBay sets lower fee percentages on categories with typically higher price points and thinner margins, and higher percentages on categories where sellers can more easily absorb the cost.

The formulas this calculator uses

Final Value Fee = (Selling Price + Shipping Charged) × Fee % + Fixed Fee
Net Profit = Total Received - Final Value Fee - Item Cost - Your Shipping - Other Costs

To find a break-even or target-profit price, the calculator reverses this: it adds your target profit back to all your costs and fees, then solves for the total amount you'd need to receive from the buyer.

Frequently asked questions
Does eBay charge fees on shipping too?+
Yes. The final value fee is calculated on the total amount the buyer pays, which includes the shipping you charge them, not just the item price — so charging more for shipping doesn't avoid the fee.
Is there a fixed fee on top of the percentage?+
eBay typically charges a small fixed per-order fee in addition to the percentage-based final value fee. This calculator includes a general reference amount, but always confirm the current figure in your Seller Hub.
Why did my actual payout come in lower than expected?+
Promoted Listings fees, store subscription costs, international transaction fees, or returns and refunds can all reduce your final payout beyond the standard final value fee.
Does free shipping hurt my profit?+
Not inherently — many sellers build the shipping cost into the item price instead. What matters for profit is the total amount received minus total costs, regardless of how it's split between item price and shipping.
How do I find my exact category fee rate?+
Your exact final value fee rate depends on your specific listing category and is listed in eBay's official fee schedule under Seller Hub — the ranges here are general reference points, not live rates.
